One of the most common mistakes when using dumbbells in your routine is assuming you have to use heavy weights to get results.
In my routines, I generally use lighter dumbbell weights with higher reps but keeping that maximum control. Using weights that are too heavy for you can result in injuries and you may not get the results that you want.
